Advance Practice Nurse Educator (APNE)
Ruth Appiah-Boateng is a highly skilled and experienced Master’s prepared RN with a diverse background in various care settings. After completing her BScN from Western University, she commenced her nursing career in rural and Indigenous communities in northern Ontario. Subsequently, she acquired her Critical and Emergency Care certification and 2012 returned to Toronto to contribute her expertise to the Emergency Department at Toronto General Hospital.
As a leader, Ruth is deeply committed to quality improvement and education, actively engaging in initiatives to foster positive change for patients and clinicians. Among the initiatives she has spearheaded and participated in is Sickle Cell education. Ruth firmly believes that education is pivotal in equipping nurses with the necessary tools to deliver effective, socially informed, patient-centered care. Collaborating with lived experienced advocates, Ruth has been instrumental in raising awareness about vaso-occlusive episodes and their impact on the sickle cell community among the emergency staff at Toronto General and Toronto Western Hospital and has influenced other colleagues to engage in quality improvement initiatives geared towards improving times to analgesia from triage for patients experiencing a vaso-occlusive episode. Together with lived experienced advocates, she has initiated discussions on providing equitable healthcare. Although the conversation has commenced, Ruth remains steadfast in her efforts to promote awareness, accountability, and respect on behalf of the sickle cell community.
