Empowering Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Sickle Cell Care

The Sickle Cell Awareness Group of Ontario (SCAGO) is dedicated to serving a medical minority group and championing equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across all facets of its work. Our ongoing initiatives address systemic barriers and promote better health outcomes for underserved populations.

EDI Initiatives Delivered by SCAGO

SCAGO collaborates with organizations, such as Canadian Blood Services, Roots community Services, Rexdale CHC, Black Creek CHC, and representing equity-deserving communities to ensure our efforts are informed, inclusive, and responsive to community needs.

SCAGO develops and delivers educational modules for healthcare practitioners, specifically aimed at building clinical capacity and addressing bias and anti-Black racism within sickle cell care.

We provide scholarships to students in secondary and post-secondary education, supporting the next generation of leaders from marginalized groups.

SCAGO offers a dedicated youth empowerment initiative for individuals aged 15-30 who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or refugees. This program equips young people with leadership skills, mentorship, and opportunities to engage in advocacy.

To reach Francophone communities, we produce and distribute podcasts in French, increasing accessibility and awareness.

Our organization hosts health fairs focused on Black health, providing resources, screenings, and information tailored to the needs of Black communities.

We organize events that prioritize mental health and wellness, recognizing the importance of holistic care for individuals living with sickle cell disease.

SCAGO actively advocates for policies and systemic changes at both the federal and provincial level that benefit the most vulnerable, striving to create equitable access to care and support.

We work to increase accessibility to curative (casgevy) and disease-modifying treatments—such as hydroxyurea—by supporting their inclusion on formularies.

Inherent to SCAGO's mission is the commitment to serving medical minority groups through informed partnerships, targeted education, and advocacy. These initiatives collectively advance EDI in sickle cell awareness and care, creating lasting impact for Ontario's most vulnerable communities.
